Retired Jersey
On that rare occasion when an individual of unique talent and achievement has brought the highest of acclaim to Wake Forest, the University has elected to recognize that accomplishment with its highest athletic honor.
Excerpt from the dedication speech delivered on the day Brian Piccolo’s Wake Forest University jersey was retired. This quote appears in the display case carrying the jersey.
“On that rare occasion when an individual of unique talent and achievement has brought the highest of acclaim to Wake Forest, the University has elected to recognize that accomplishment with its highest athletic honor.
In over a century, there have been only five men whose contributions on the playing field have been of such a special nature. Their deeds were of such an incomparable level that it was determined no one who followed could be compared to them. Their numbers will never be worn by another. They truly had earned their own place in Wake Forest Athletics history.”
In addition to Wake Forest, the Chicago Bears also retired Piccolo’s ‘41’ jersey.
